Living Out the Scripture

by Rick on August 24, 2007

Just what you all have been waiting for: a meme! That’s right, I’ve been tagged by blogger tumbler tumblogger tumble-logger Ben Gray for the meme “Living Out the Scripture.” I must now “Post that verse or story of scripture which is important to you, which you find yourself re-visiting time after time.”

Resistance is futile. I must comply.

I particularly love the Book of Jude. Yes, it is short, but its twenty-five verses pack such a bang and touch so many different topics — the return of Christ (as prophesied by pre-noahic Enoch), the condemnation of false teachers (right doctrine is important!) and of unbelievers, the importance of rebuke in contending for the faith, the preservation of the saints, the majesty of Christ, and more. I’ll not quote the entire book, but I will share a couple of verses:

But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith; praying in the Holy Spirit; 21keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting anxiously for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life. 22And have mercy on some, who are doubting; 23save others, snatching them out of the fire; and on some have mercy with fear, hating even the garment polluted by the flesh.

24Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy, 25to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen. Jude 20-25, NASB

Now to continue the meme, I tag… Justin, Shawn, and Jamie.

As an aside, it was suggested by Sidney in the comments at openswitch that there should be a Bible class for marking up Scriptures. I’m not very creative, but since the inception of this blog, I’ve been marking up my Scripture blockquotes with three classes: “bible,” either “old-testament” or “new-testament,” and an appropriate version class such as “nasb” or “kjv.” Feel free to copy or suggest something better, anyone. :) (I haven’t yet decided on a good way to style up the quotations yet, but the possibility is there for me at any time.)

 • Undisciplined Rant about “Yahweh/LORD” — Undisciplined or not, I think Dan Phillips makes a good point. There is simply no reason for “the Lord” or “the Lord God” to continue appearing in English Bible translations. We know better than that. Let the Jewish superstition die, and let us glory in the name of Yahweh, which men have been calling on for thousands of years (Genesis 4:26). I’m going to resolve to make use of God’s name more often, reserving “the Lord” or “the Lord God” only for direct quotations of versions which employed them. And for those who are geeky enough to have noticed, I mark up those words thusly: .
 • THE Least-Heard Marriage Truth — Another from Dan Phillips; I don’t know if it is really the least heard, but it is a good one nonetheless. He calls all those who are wed to hold firm to their vows — failure to do so is a sin against God Himself. To the unwed, this message of fidelity to one’s vows & spouse should be the first thing they are told by their pastor when they are preparing to get married. If one cannot live with it, one should not get married. Period.
 • How to Pray for Our Children — From Amy Scott comes a list of nearly fifty things that should be prayed about when raising children. Even if you don’t have children (I don’t), read through the list and invigorate your prayers with new focuses!
 • Jesus Songs — Keith ponders whether or not “Back in Black” really is an appropriate song to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus with. What do you say?

hi:Glam Dolls — For all your anorexic-doll-collectin’ needs

by Rick on August 23, 2007

hi:Glam dolls — The perfect thing for your daughter, if unnaturally proportioned, anorexic dolls are your forte. Views available from fans (with pics) or an anti-fan. We already have a slew of Barbie & Bratz dolls poisoning the well, so to speak, about realistic self-images; must we now add freakishly-long-leg envy? I also told myself not to mention the fact that their skirts/shorts (or lack thereof…) looks like a failing attempt to cover oneself with a hand wash cloth.

Okay, so I mentioned it anyway.

FAQ & Blogrolls

by Rick on August 21, 2007

Well, I’ve finally gotten around to adding my daily reads to my blogroll here. Some of them are theology and/or apologetics related; others are completely different. Whatever the case, as usual, I cannot vouch 100% for the content so exercise whatever due diligence you need in browsing to them. Check out the sites, though, and see if you find something new and interesting to keep you occupied. :)

Also, I’ve added an FAQ section, which by no means is comprehensive. Actually, you might want to hold off on checking it out for quite some time. However, it is there, and whatever additions there are will show up immediately. Hopefully, someday it’ll be a handy little reference for someone who, well, is reference-less.

 • Vladstudio WallpapersVladstudio — Wonderfully creative desktop backgrounds by Vlad Gerasimov. Vladstudio is the source of all of those great images used in the header here (with Vlad’s permission, of course). The attached image is a preview of his latest work, whatever it may be when you read this!
 • Legend of Legaia — I’m not for sure what brought it to mind yesterday, but I stumbled back upon Legend of Legaia, one of my favorite PlayStation games of all time. While it’s nowhere near the role-playing caliber of, say, Final Fantasy VII, Legend is an incredible game in its own right. If you have the chance to play it, don’t pass it up!
 • “Frozen Smoke” Miracle Material — It’s kinda like activated carbon in that it has an incredibly high surface area, but it’s also one of the world’s lightest solids, being almost 100% comprised of a gas. Plastics & silicone are old hat; ’bout time we get a new miracle material!
 • Good Doctrine Makes Better (Teenage) Saints — I have gotten the impression from the “emerging/emergent/whatever” church that emphasizing doctrine is not only unnecessary but is harmful to “missional” living. Turns out there is evidence that people without a strong doctrinal understanding will not be all too different from the world around them. Imagine that: the Word and the truths contained therein really are a lamp unto our feet, a light unto our paths! Hat tip: Amy Scott.
 • Two German Scientists Claim to Have Broken the Speed of Light — A quantum miracle? Or misinterpreted results? I’m unsure what the significance would be of transporting microwaves instantaneously between two points would be; though I imagine if they figure that out, it’d be a step toward revolutionizing the pizza delivery market. Mmmm, Telepizza™.
 • Adam got bord so God made a woman for Adam — Oh, so that’s why. :)
