A Vista of Hades

If you ever come across a King James Onlyist protesting modern versions because they exchange the word “Hell” for the mythological “Hades,” please kindly point out that the English word “Hell” is directly from Norse mythology: Hel is the ruler of Hel, the Norse underworld.

Whatever the name of the Christian underworld, it’s worth noting that concepts — Hades, Hel — used to denote them in the Scriptures are themselves quite terrible. But perhaps they are lost on our modern, tech-savvy culture. What if we update the translation of “Hades” to something a bit more relevant? What if Luke 16:23 began, “And using Windows Vista he lift up his eyes, being in torments…”

Terrifying.
