My name is Rick Beckman, and this is KingdomGeek, my blog. KingdomGeek was begun sometime in 2004 or 2005 when I first discovered what a joy blogging could be. At the time, the name “KingdomGeek” was not yet in use… I don’t quite remember what the original name of my first blog was; was it “Rick’s Watchtower”? “Back to the Bible”? Over time, other names were used, such as “Timothy’s Burden,” even though my name isn’t Timothy (nor was it back then!). Whenever the blog was started, the earliest post I’ve been able to keep track of dates to June 19, 2005.
I began blogging in an effort to obey the words of 2 Timothy 3:16–4:4 in an online environment, a burden (as in Timothy’s burden, hence the former name) which included the following:
- Defenses of Biblical doctrine, including responses to others’ writings. As the 2 Timothy passage states, people who have itching ears to satisfy their own desires will heap unto themselves teachers who will scratch the itch. These teachers may even be firmly entrenched within orthodox churches, but if their doctrines are not sound, a reason why must be given.
- Commentary of the Bible. I love the Bible, but I certainly don’t read it enough. If I set out to provide as much Bible commentary as I can in the very public arena which is the Internet, I hoped to have even more motivation to know and understand the Word of God.
- Assembly truths. Rejecting tradition and embracing Scripture is amazingly liberating, especially in regards to the church.
- Aids to Christian living. Just how do you apply the Scriptures to daily life anyway?
- Off-topic stuff. Yeah, that isn’t the greatest description in the world, but it is nonetheless true. I have a number of lesser interests and will write about them every so often.
As time has gone by, I have blogged about a variety of things, ranging from the banalities of my life to movie reviews to political rants and raves.
That diversity is KingdomGeek today, which is so named because I am a self-described geek who through no effort on my part has been elected into God’s gracious kingdom.
While I still believe in Timothy’s burden, I have grown increasingly fond of the topic of blogging itself and have become increasingly involved with one of the premier premium themes for WordPress, Thesis by DIYthemes. Don’t be surprised if I blog about WordPress blogging (particularly blogging with Thesis) fairly often.
