Raven’s Antispam

by Rick Beckman on June 23, 02008

Raven’s Antispam is a modification to the popular phpBB message board system. It is compatible with phpBB version 2.0.23, the last stable release of the 2.0.x series. No plans are in place to port Raven’s Antispam to the new 3.0.x series.

Raven’s Antispam puts an end to automated message board spam — in the form of registrations or posts — immediately. It just works. Note that humans may still spam your boards; robots, however, will be stopped cold.

Users who have JavaScript enabled will notice no difference in how the board works; if JavaScript is disabled, logged-out users will see a special field which will need to be completed at registration and when posting.

Download

Installation

  • Download the MOD (see above).
  • Extract the files.
  • Follow the directions in the file ravens-antispam.mod. This is a plain text file which should open fine with Notepad, WordPad, or similar.
  • That’s it! Go ahead and disable any Visual Confirmation (CAPTCHA) protections you have enabled. Actually, go ahead and enable guest posting to your forums too, if you want. Spam bots will no longer be a nuisance!
  • Optional: A link in your board’s footer back to this page would be appreciated so that other phpBB 2.0.x users will know where to find this modification so that they too can enjoy a spam-free board.

Credit

Raven’s Antispam for phpBB is based upon Raven’s Antispam for WordPress. I ported it to phpBB with the original author’s permission.

License

Raven’s Antispam is released under the GPL.
